One man is dead after falling from a piece of industrial equipment at Neptune Terminals on the North Vancouver waterfront.
The company issued a statement Monday evening saying a longshore worker was involved in a workplace incident around 11 a.m.
The employee was rushed to hospital but he later died of his injuries.
“All of us at Neptune Terminals are devastated by this news. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and offer our support during this difficult time,” said Neptune president Claus Thornberg in a statement.
Because the port is under federal jurisdiction, the workplace death is now under investigation by Employment and Social Development Canada.
“We are committed to having a full and complete understanding of the tragic events that occurred today to ensure such an accident never happens again,” added Thornberg.
A spokesperson for the company could not say whether the worker was wearing a harness at the time of the fall.
In 2016, ironworker Costec Chomenko died in a fall at Neptune.
