A storm of massive proportions battered the Lower Mainland Friday night (Sept. 17) knocking down trees and creating power outages.
According to BC Hydro's outages map, crews are working to restore power to 1,195 customers over an area stretching from East of Ash St., North of 42nd Ave., West of Main St. and South of Midlothian Ave.
Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver estimating rainfall amounts of 50 to 80 mm and at the same time calling for winds gusting to 80 km/h. Vancouver Weather Records reported that by 5 p.m. it had rained a total of 39.3 mm making it Vancouver's wettest Sept. 17 since records began in 1900.
Reports on social media also show a tree plucked from its foundations and laid across a sidewalk between Gilford and Denman Streets. Five years earlier and in the same area another tree was uprooted by strong winds and hit a nearby apartment building.
While Vancouverites are reaching for their umbrellas, skiers and snowboarders are casting their eyes to the mountains as snow cameras at Whistler Blackcomb show a decent dump of the white stuff.
