One novice driver attempting to fly by night along the Upper Levels Highway had his rush stopped by a North Vancouver RCMP officer.
An image shared by the local police detachment showed that the officer clocked the speedster travelling 171 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone. The picture also shows that the police cruiser’s stereo was playing Fly by Night, a single off the 1975 album of the same name by Canadian progressive rock legends Rush.
Just before 10 p.m. on April 1, the 20-something-year-old driver's evening was rocked by an excessive speeding ticket and the impounding of the offending vehicle, a white Infiniti coupe, for seven days.
The driver, who lives in North Van, was slapped with a $368-dollar fine and a tow bill that will likely cost him around $900, said RCMP spokesperson Const. Mansoor Sahak.
When they caught the driver, officers were conducting laser enforcement from the Lonsdale overpass, a place they monitor regularly, Sahak said.
"We continue to see these high speeds on this stretch of the highway," he said. "Our message is the same: we’re out there doing enforcement, and if you’re doing risky behaviour, you’ll be caught."
As for the enforcing officer's taste in music, he's a Rush fan, Sahak confirmed.
"It's kind of ironic how they're listening to Fly by Night when this car was literally flying by at night time," he said.
