The District of West Vancouver has closed off a popular Hollyburn Mountain hiking trail after a substantial landslide.

District staff learned of the landslide, which severed the Millstream Trail just east of the bridge crossing the western branch of McDonald Creek on Monday.

“It’s quite a big slide,” said Jeff McDonald, district spokesman. “Bigger than the one we had last year on the Trans Canada trail.”

The trail is frequented by dog walkers because of its flat grade and easy access from Highview Lookout at the second switchback on Cypress Bowl Road. For the foreseeable future, the district is asking everyone to keep away.

“The trail is gone and it’s quite steep there and quite unstable,” McDonald said. “Staff (are) closing the trail, putting up warning signs and asking people to stay away from the trail for now because it’s still raining and, most likely, the slide was caused by heavy rains. Further slides are possible.”

Staff are in the early stages of assessing the damage and don’t yet know what remediation work will be needed before the trail can be reopened.
