West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Lynne Block has been named shadow minister of education.

BC Conservative Leader John Rustad announced his shadow cabinet picks on Wednesday, following BC NDP Leader David Eby’s cabinet minister appointments on Monday.

In the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Block will be a critic of Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Lisa Beare, who is the province’s new minister of education and child care.

Block will bring years of experience to her position in the shadow cabinet. Before winning her riding by a wide margin in the October election, Block had been a trustee for West Vancouver Schools for six years.

In order to take on her new role as MLA, she had to give up her position with the school district.

Block said she was deeply honoured by the appointment.

"As someone who has dedicated much of my life to the field of education – as a long-time educator and former school trustee – this role is both a privilege and a natural extension of my lifelong passion for supporting students, families and educators," she said.

Throughout her career, Block said she's witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and its ability to shape individual lives and the future of our communities.

"In this new role, I am excited to bring my experience and insights to the table as I advocate for a system that prioritizes academic excellence, equitable access and meaningful support for all learners," she said.

B.C.’s education system is one of the province's most valuable assets, but it also faces significant challenges, Block said.

"I am committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders to address these issues and to champion initiatives that prepare our students for the opportunities of tomorrow while supporting teachers and staff in their vital work," she said.

Block said she will engage with educators, parents and students to ensure every child in B.C. has access to a world-class education.
