Representatives of the North Shore Neighbourhood House's Edible Garden Project are inviting community members of all ages to volunteer to help build the new Sutherland Schoolyard Market Garden this month.
The market garden will be built on the front lawn of North Vancouver's Sutherland secondary and will be the first of its kind on the North Shore, according to a press release.
The initiative is intended to create a lasting community asset that will beautify the community, provide hands-on educational opportunities and fresh food to local residents. The market garden will be run by the Edible Garden Project and will serve as an outdoor classroom for Sutherland students, offering learning opportunities ranging from farming and biology to woodworking and marketing.
Construction is underway and volunteers are wanted to help build the garden, including making and filling 100 raised beds, mulching paths, planting flower borders and laying irrigation.
Those involved have organized 11 workbees, which started Monday and will be held until March 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children are welcome with adult supervision at all workbees, and kids activities are being planned for March 11, 19 and 20.
