No one was hurt after a vehicle went up in flames on Highway 1 in North Vancouver.

At around 6:30 a.m., local fire departments responded to a call about the fire, eastbound near the Lynn Valley exit on the Upper Levels Highway.

The vehicle, a KIA SUV, was completely engulfed in flames, says City of North Vancouver Fire Department deputy chief Andrew Payne.

There were three young people in the vehicle that all got out safely, he said. Two fire trucks responded and quickly put out the flames, Payne added.

Before the fire started, the people in the car heard a clunk and a bang, and then the engine light came on, Payne said. That's when they decided to pull over.

"The occupants of the car did the right thing: removed themselves from the vehicle," the firefighter said. "Trying to put a car fire out yourself is not a great idea."

Following the incident, one lane of eastbound traffic was closed on Highway 1. The incident was cleared by 7:30 a.m., according to Drive BC.
