A Vancouver man has been killed in a crash with a driver while riding his bike on Cypress Bowl Road.
West Vancouver police closed the road just above the first lookout around 12:15 p.m. Christmas Day after a report of a crash involving a cyclist and a driver.
When first responders arrived, bystanders and drivers were attempting CPR on the victim but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Multiple witnesses told investigators the driver and the cyclist were both headed up the hill when the cyclist veered into the same northbound lane as the driver of an older model Acura sedan.
According to police, charges are not anticipated at this time, but the RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is expected to produce a very detailed report about what happened.
Members of the Vancouver road biking community have identified the victim as Ivan Young, a skilled cyclist who had ridden to the top of Cypress Bowl Road more than 100 times in 2018 alone.
“I was always impressed by his ability to put personal goals in front of himself … and knock them off,” wrote Ross Creasy in a message to the North Shore News.
