UPDATE: Injured West Van officer expected to make full recovery

A West Vancouver Police constable is in hospital aftercrashing his motorcycle during a police pursuit Monday night. Several officers were monitoring the north end of the LionsGate Bridge around 6 p.m.

A West Vancouver Police constable is in hospital aftercrashing his motorcycle during a police pursuit Monday night.

Several officers were monitoring the north end of the LionsGate Bridge around 6 p.m. when they noticed a beige Chevrolet Impala drive ontothe bridge deck via the bus lane, according to the WVPD. The driver noticed thepolice and merged back into the proper lane, and when officers pursued, theImpala bolted south into oncoming traffic.

Fearing for public safety, police chose not to chase thecar, which had been reported stolen, but followed behind and dispatched theVancouver Police Department.

A West Vancouver constable, tailing the vehicle on amotorcycle, crashed just after leaving the Stanley Park Causeway.

As the motorcycle exited the causeway onto Georgia Street,the front wheel hit the center median and caused the police officer to beejected. . . . The officer struck a pole and landed in the oncoming trafficlanes, said West Vancouver Const. Lisa Schmidtke, in a release.

Despite being badly banged up, the officer is expected tomake a full recovery.

He is recovering from surgery to his shoulder and he wishesto thank the paramedics, hospital staff, everyone who helped at the scene andthe many well-wishers who have sent messages, Schmidtke said on Wednesday. Werevery happy with his progress hes grateful and were very grateful that hesdoing well.

VPD later tracked the vehicle down in East Vancouver andarrested two Alberta residents, a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman.

Investigators are looking to charge the two with possessionof stolen property.
