Canadians in B.C. spend more on child care than anywhere else in the country. According to the federal government, its plan to roll out $10-a-day child care would save British Columbians $9,930 per child annually.
That’s why Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was chatting with kids at Parkgate Society Day Camp in North Vancouver on Tuesday (July 19), as part of his summer tour. He was accompanied by Burnaby North-Seymour MP Terry Beech.
The society’s Child and Family Centre and Seymour School Age Care were chosen by the province to become a prototype site for the $10-a-day program under ChildCareBC.
Through the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, all provinces will have daily child care for 10 bucks by 2025.
Currently, Canada child benefit payments to families, which is indexed to inflation, will be increasing again on July 20.
The children, on the other hand, were unaware of the funding program, and many didn't know who Trudeau was.
“Are you the president?” one kid asked during Tuesday’s visit.
Trudeau explained that he’s like the president, but in Canada.
