A 25-year-old man from North Vancouver is facing probable drug charges after a distinctive odour coming from his backpack drew the attention of transit police.

The man and a friend recently boarded the SkyTrain at the Main Street station along with two plainclothes transit police. The two officers were immediately bowled over by "an extremely strong smell of marijuana" coming from the two men, said spokeswoman Anne Drennan.

The young men were asked to get off the train at Stadium station. In a subsequent search, the officers seized about two pounds of marijuana from a backpack worn by one of the men. Drennan said the pot was simply packed into plastic Ziploc bags, with no attempt to disguise the smell. "It's a much stronger smell than if someone's smoking a joint," she said. "They reeked of it."

Police have recommended a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
