Spaghetti Unchained! Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci, and the Splendours of the Spaghetti Western

Anchored by an exclusive run of the rerelease of the Quentin Tarantino favourite Django, the reference point for Tarantino's recent hit Django Unchained, the Cinematheque's Spaghetti Western series features several classics from Leone and Corbucci, and a handful of other bad-ass Westerns all'italiana, including gems by Gianfranco Parolini, Giulio Petroni, and Carlo Lizzani. No less than eight of the ten films in the series were scored by Ennio Morricone, the composer whose music is virtually synonymous with the popular subgenre. Until April 19.

Drifting States: The Films of Denis Côté

The unique independent vision, cool formal elegance, and daring experimentalism of New Brunswick-born, Quebec-based director Denis Côté (born in 1973) have made him one of Canada's most internationally admired and acclaimed filmmakers. Côté's sublime, minimalist films, typically focusing on characters who are, literally or figuratively, on the fringes of society, have a beauty and grace that belie the often ultra-low-budget means with which they were made. They explore themes of loneliness, alienation, and isolation with humanity, intimacy, and emotional impact. March 15-17, 25, 27-28; April 3

Ernest & Celine Directed by Benjamin Renner, Vincent Patar, Stephane Aubier (France, 2012, 79 mins, DCP) When Celestine, a mouse, persuades Ernest (a bear) not to eat her it's the beginning of a beautiful friendship. He's a busker by trade. She's also something of a bohemian, and soon they're inseparable, much to the consternation of family, rodents and other animals. March 16, 17, 23 and 24.

Cloudburst

Directed by Thom Fitzgerald (Canada, 2011, 93 mins, DCP) Olympia Dukakis gives an brilliant, barnstorming performance as a foulmouthed lesbian, Stella, who isn't about to let her lover of 31 years, Dot (Brenda Fricker), be carted off to an old folks' home without a fight. Her plan? A daring rescue, followed by flight to Canada and marriage - an elopement. March 15-19, 24, 31 and April 1.

Barbara

Directed by Christian Petzold (Germany, 2012, 105 mins, DCP) A new female doctor arrives at a provincial hospital in what is still East Germany. Barbara (Petzold's regular star, Nina Hoss) is a transfer from Berlin, and immediately strikes her colleagues as distant and aloof. But there are reasons, as they suspect. Her small apartment is regularly searched, meanwhile her preference for cycling to and from work seems designed to make it more difficult for the Stasi to keep an eye on her. March 15-17, 19, 21, 23, 24.
