A solidarity rally and candle light vigil will be held at a Vancouver park this weekend.
Locals will gather at Grandview Park on Sunday (Dec. 11) to remember and honour missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people, and to stand with survivors, families, and communities in Winnipeg and across Manitoba.
It's an "urgent time to bring awareness and stand with Indigenous people," reads a poster for the event.
The rally and vigil comes after news of an alleged serial killer being charged with murder in the deaths of three Indigenous women and a fourth woman who is also believed to be Indigenous.
Winnipeg resident Jeremy Anthony Michael Skibicki has been charged with the murders and his social media presence is "rife with violent sentiments, as well as antisemitic, misogynistic and white supremacist material," reports CBC.
"We mourn with the families of Rebecca Contois, Morgan Beatrice Harris, Marcedes Myran, and a fourth victim who has been named Buffalo Woman out of respect. We also extend our condolences to the people and communities of Crane River First Nation and Long Plain First Nation and share their grief with them," reads a statement from Feminists Deliver, a grassroots organization supporting B.C.-based women, Indigiqueer and Two-Spirit people, and the LGBTQ+ community.
"Our country’s and our policymakers’ willful ignorance towards linking gender-based violence with systems of oppression is troubling, and has resulted in these genocides," continues the organization.
Attendees at the solidarity rally and candle light vigil are asked to bring drums, ribbon skirts, or to wear red.
