Power outages darken areas of North Shore Friday

A series of power outages across the North Shore affected more than 4,000 homes this past weekend. A cable fault near a substation in the Deep Cove area left approximately 4,000 customers without power from 5: 21 p.m. until 11: 35 p.m. on Friday.

A series of power outages across the North Shore affected more than 4,000 homes this past weekend.

A cable fault near a substation in the Deep Cove area left approximately 4,000 customers without power from 5: 21 p.m. until 11: 35 p.m. on Friday. Jennifer Young, BC Hydro spokeswoman, said it didn't take long for BC Hydro to address the situation.

"Our crew was able to isolate the problem quickly," she said. "A couple of thousand were restored by 7 p.m."

However, 1,630 homes west of Indian River Road and north of Roche Point Drive experienced multiple power outages throughout the night.

In West Vancouver, more than 80 homes were without power after a transformer exploded Friday at 1427 Chartwell Dr.

Nancy Carle was on her way to her father's place near the transformer. "When I came up they had the road blocked off about five houses down," she said. "The fireman came up to me and told me turn my car around."

Martin Ernst, West Vancouver assistant fire chief said that it's uncommon for pad mounted transformers to catch fire.

"I can't remember the last time I've been to a pad-mounted transformer fire in my career," he said. "I've been doing this for 26 years."
