Park Royal construction ices festive decor

Shoppers bemoan lack of lights, baubles at north and south malls

It’s not beginning to look a lot like Christmas inside Park Royal mall, according to one disappointed shopper.

Karen Hardie has been shopping at the West Vancouver mall since its inception but this season she was underwhelmed by the lack of festive interior decorations. “It was totally void of anything Christmas, I wasn’t pleased,” she said.

She says both the north and south mall lack any sort of holiday flair, with the south side only exhibiting a “rather tired Santa Claus grotto.”

She understands the mall is being revamped but figures brightening up the interior with holiday decorations would “be a great way to distract from any inconvenience due to the renovations.”

By contrast, she said The Village at Park Royal is beautifully decorated with an abundance of lights and baubles. “It’s beautiful.”

Park Royal marketing manager Christine Piers explained extensive renovations to update the mall resulted in less interior holiday decorations this year.

“Unfortunately, because of the construction schedule and because planning and execution of the centre’s interior holiday decorations is an extremely time-consuming process we had to make the tough decision to forego our usual level of interior decorations this year,” she wrote in an email.

“However, what we did do instead was really focus on the exterior lighting, which I know has been very well received. We appreciate the community’s understanding and I can assure them that we absolutely will be bringing a more festive environment and decorations back to Park Royal’s interior spaces in 2016.”
