Oscars bring out beauty

Hollywood's leading ladies at the 85th annual Academy Awards last Sunday eschewed elaborate updos and piled-on cosmetics in favour of natural-looking makeup, nude nails and finished, yet unfussy, hair. All this week, the web's top entertainment and fashion sites were ranking the best beauty looks from Oscar night.

E! Online championed Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence as a red-carpet beauty all-star. "Not only was her gown off the charts but her feminine makeup was perfectly on point," reported the entertainment and celebrity news site.

Allure.com liked Best Supporting Actress Anne Hathaway's petal pink lips, which were a perfect match for the Oscar winner's blush pink Prada gown. "It took a few attempts to get the right lip colour," said Kate Lee, a Chanel celebrity makeup artist who was quoted on the site. "We tried bright pink and a mid-toned rose before settling on Chanel Rouge Allure (Luminous Intense Lip Color) in Éva."

Les Misèrables star Amanda Seyfried was one of the few stars who added colour to her face at the Oscars, with lavender lids. Star Jessica Chastain wore a bright red lip and a simple stroke of black liner with her glittery Armani Privé gown.

A major trend to come out of award season was the brushed-out wave, according to the daily entertainment news and lifestyle trends site Popsugar. At the Oscars, Best Actress nominee Chastain and presenter Reese Witherspoon sported the "Old Hollywood look," which featured a deep side part and cascading waves over one shoulder.

The lob, or long bob, was another red-carpet hair favourite. Zooey Deschanel, Stacy Keibler and Petra Nemcova all coiled their long tresses into chin-length 'dos.

Hair accessories like those that adorned Salma Hayek's top knot, Sandra Bullock's straight tresses and Nicole Kidman's romantic, loose curls were also highlighted as a trend, and one that's sure to rock this spring's grad party circuit.

Naked nails were another red-carpet look. Jennifer Aniston, Amy Adams and Jennifer Garner all wore neutral nail varnish.

Silver Linings Playbook star Lawrence's silvery digits were courtesy of celebrity nail artist April Foreman, who coated the actress' nails with Covergirl Outlast nail gloss in Forever Frosted, Nailitmag.com reported.

Not all of Hollywood's beauties favoured pale skin with their light-coloured looks. This was California, after all, and several stars opted for a sun-kissed glow. British beauty brand St. Tropez, which hosted the Brit Beauty Suite at The Four Seasons Beverly Hills during Oscar week, offered Hollywood's elite a menu of tanning and skin finishing services to ensure head-to-toe flawless perfection on the red carpet. Oscar presenter Hayek, Emmy Rossum, Kelly Osbourne and Rosamund Pike reportedly took advantage of the brand's hospitality, according to a release.

Hayek's glow was courtesy of St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Lotion and Rossum's fair skin was prepped the day before using St. Tropez Gradual Tan Everyday Body Lotion applied by celebrity makeup artist Jo Baker. Rossum's Oscar night makeup glistened with bronzed hues on eyes, cheeks and lips.
