THE FOLLOWING is a selection of volunteer opportunities from various community organizations, made available through Volunteer North Shore, a service of North Shore Community Resources Society.
Recreation Commissioners: Volunteers will be providing guidance to the North Vancouver Recreation Commission by volunteering their time and energy to guide the recreation commission's policies and present the best interest of North Vancouver residents. It is a three-year position.
Program Coordinator: On behalf of Osteoporosis Canada, the volunteer co-ordinator will conduct meetings and contact speakers, such as health professionals, and arrange for them to give presentations.
English Language Coach: The language coach will work with a group of five newcomers with the same language ability level for one hour. The goal is to increase their conversational fluency, build their confidence in speaking English and to support their adaptation to Canadian life. The role of the coach will be to facilitate conversation, explain vocabulary and provide each person in the group opportunities to speak.
Street Team Leader: The purpose of this role is to lead the Canadian Cancer Society Daffodil Street Team campaign in your community with the support of the project manager.
Distress Services Volunteer: The Crisis Centre is looking for caring, dedicated people to volunteer for 24/7 distress services. Volunteers answer calls from people in crisis on the regional distress line. They also answer calls from the B.C.-wide crisis number 1-800-SUICIDE. Volunteers also work on the YouthInBC. com web-based hotline for youth in crisis by conducting one-on-one chats with youth requesting support.
