A purse-snatching went awry Thursday, when a would-be thief stole a purse from a woman at a bus stop near Lonsdale Avenue and 15th Street but was confronted by witnesses and the victim herself.

The alleged robber, described as a balding man with curly blond hair wearing a black leather jacket with light coloured stripes on the sleeves, took the purse at 12: 30 p.m. and ran across the street.

But when chased and cornered by witnesses and the victim, he dropped the purse and ran towards Chesterfield Avenue, where police, responding to a 9-1-1 call from a witness, caught the suspect.

The victim left the scene before police had a chance to speak with her.

"We were told by witnesses that the victim has her purse back and wasn't injured in the robbery," Cpl. Doug Trousdell said in a media release. "But we would like to follow up with her to make sure that she's alright and to get more information about the incident."

The victim or any witnesses are being asked to contact Cpl. Gary Goller of the North Vancouver RCMP at 604985-1311.
