Confederation Field is getting a facelift thanks to an $800,000 project for new artificial turf.
The City of North Vancouver is currently in the process of replacing 12-year-old synthetic turf at the park near Carson Graham secondary, according to Mike Hunter, manager of parks and environment.
"This is more than just pulling up carpet and putting down new carpet," he said.
The turf had lived well past its eight-year warranty, but there were also problems with the field's drainage system, which is getting replaced.
Hunter said the city is aiming to complete the project by the end of August. "That's the target," he said. "We want to be done when school's back in session."
Thanks to the new turf 's infill comprised of locally recycled tires, the city qualified for a $30,000 grant from the Tire Stewardship BC Association, which is a notfor-profit society managing B.C.'s tire-recycling program.
Field funding also derives from contributions through sports field users, which come in through the North Vancouver Sport Council, according to Hunter.
"Particularly this warmup area we're adding in the corner, it's primarily funded through capital contributions through the field users," he added.
The new artificial turf is expected to last another 12 years for the city, Hunter said.
