North Vancouver RCMP are asking for the public’s help in finding a motorcyclist who clipped and injured one of their members during a traffic stop.
At approximately 2:50 p.m. on Feb. 9, the rider of a black sport bike was flagged down by traffic enforcement just west of Westview Avenue. After initially stopping, the motorcyclist sped past the officer, knocking him to the ground, and continuing west on Highway 1.
The officer was taken to Lions Gate Hospital with minor injuries and later released. North Vancouver RCMP spokesman Cpl. Richard De Jong said he’s now resting and recuperating at home while the investigation continues.
“We are still actively looking for the bike of interest,” he said. “We’re quite concerned that an officer was injured because of his actions.”
Based on witness statements, investigators believe the suspect got on the highway at Lonsdale and there may be dash cams or surveillance cameras that captured the rider in the moments leading up to the incident. It’s possible the suspect was with someone else on another bike at the time, De Jong said.
On Tuesday, De Jong said there had been a lot of interest generated by the story. “We’re getting some tips coming in,” he said. “We are following up with some good leads.”
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have footage of motorcycles on Lonsdale or Highway 1 around that time to contact North Vancouver Traffic Services at 604-985-1311.
