North Shore seniors rocking it on the runway for slow fashion

The event at North Vancouver's Silver Harbour Seniors Activity Centre was 'rebellion against the wastefulness of fast fashion'

Forget rocking chairs. More like rocking it.

Silver Harbour Seniors Activity Centre members dazzled on the runway, April 12, for the centre’s Slow Fashion Show.

Volunteers in the program made and modelled the one-of-a-kind garments as a fundraiser for the centre.

By design, all of the materials were salvaged or hand-woven fabrics and textiles.

Simran Likhari, arts program co-ordinator for the centre, said it was intended to be “a thoughtful rebellion against the wastefulness of fast fashion.”

“The recent fashion show at Silver Harbour Seniors Activity Centre was a moving celebration of creativity, sustainability, and community,” she said. “Attendees were deeply touched by the artistry of the senior participants, whose stunning upcycled garments told powerful stories of resilience and imagination. Many remarked how the show challenged their assumptions about aging and inspired them to reconsider their relationship with fashion and the environment.”
