POLICE have arrested a man suspected of setting a North Vancouver supermarket on fire last month.
Investigators were called to the Save-On-Foods at 1250 Marine Drive around 2 a.m. July 11 after staff working a late shift noticed smoke at the back of the store, according to North Vancouver RCMP.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze, and the employees were able to douse the flames before the fire caused significant damage.
Witnesses at the site told police they had seen a man outside the store earlier in the evening.
Their description of the suspect eventually led investigators to the home of a 19-year-old North Vancouver resident, said Cpl. Richard De Jong of the North Vancouver RCMP. A search turned up enough evidence allegedly connecting him to the crime.
Police are recommending charges of arson endangering life.
The suspect's name has not been released, but De Jong said the man was not an employee or former employee of the store.
