A milky white substance has been spotted flowing down Hastings Creek.
After receiving reports Monday afternoon, District of North Vancouver staff responded to the spill. But the stream had cleared before they arrived, according to district spokesperson Ryan Schaap.
“While staff found some residual substance downstream, they were unable to determine what the substance was or [its] origin,” he said in an email response.
“This serves as an important reminder to never allow household detergents, paint, and bleach from entering our storm drains, as they lead directly to our rivers and creeks,” Schaap said.
Images of the spill were posted to Reddit, where users speculated that the spill was likely latex paint released into a storm drain.
To keep pollutants out of fish-bearing waterways, paint brushes should be rinsed in sinks inside homes, as stated on the DNV website. Unused paint can be recycled at certain recycling locations and paint shops on the North Shore.
Using storm drains to dispose of paint, soap, oil or other chemicals can result in fines under DNV’s environmental protection and preservation bylaw.
