SEYMOUR Golf and Country Club will be the setting for the sixth annual North Shore Mayor's Golf Tournament on Friday, May 24.

The event will feature the mayors of all three North Shore municipalities.

Designed to assist North Shore non-profit associations, the tournament has raised more than $600,000 for various organizations in its five-year history.

This year's direct beneficiary is the Hollyburn Family Services project called Supporting Seniors to Remain Housed. It will receive the first $50,000 of funds raised from this year's tournament.

The project aims to provide preventative programs and long-term follow up support for seniors at perpetual housing risk. It includes home visits, case management and liaison services with community organizations. The mayor's golf tournament event features a reception, dinner, prizes and a live auction. TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

- Don't commit to an expensive set of clubs right off the bat

Golf clubs can be expensive, so beginners should buy an affordable secondhand set of clubs so they can consider what they like before spending a lot of money. In addition, many driving ranges allow customers to rent clubs, and this can be an inexpensive way to find the right clubs for you.

- Take lessons

Before hitting the course, learn the fundamentals by taking a few lessons at the driving range.

- Take the game home with you

Purchase some instructional DVDs to learn the game during your down time throughout the week.
