THE three North Shore municipalities are teaming up to get you out of your car this fall, at least once a week.
TravelSmart North Shore is a Metro Vancouver program designed to encourage transportation choices that result in fewer greenhouse gas emissions while slowing the need to expand road infrastructure.
More than 11,000 drivers have gone online to pledge to take one fewer car trip each week.
The program, which was launched a year ago, advises drivers to hop on a bike, take transit, or to find other creative ways to keep the exhaust from spilling out of their tailpipes.
District of West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith, City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto, and District of North Vancouver Mayor Richard Walton each helped to kickstart the program by taking the pledge on Oct. 1.
"One less weekly car trip could be as simple as carpooling to a soccer game or combining errands together," Smith said. "The small things can add up."
"If everyone on the North Shore could reduce their vehicle travel by just one trip per week, it would make a big difference in terms of traffic congestion and air quality in our communities," Mussatto agreed.
"Our residents already make thousands of walking and cycling trips every day. This initiative is about building on that success," Walton said.
