The first dump of white stuff of the season is coming down on the North Shore Mountains.
But it may be a bit early to get the skis waxed.
“It’s hovering around 1 degree C. We’re getting a mix of snow and rain, snow this morning and overnight. We have a bit more snow in the forecast,” said Simon Whitehead, marketing manager for Mt. Seymour. “We’re very excited.”
Historically, Seymour tends to open in mid-December, Whitehead said, and in all likelihood, this current dusting will be gone by the weekend. But the resort is staffing up and looking forward to the official opening.
“We’re getting ready. Our hiring is nearly complete,” he said. “We’re just kind of putting on the final touches in place for the season.”
Grouse Mountain accumulated about three centimeters Tuesday afternoon, according to Julia Grant, Grouse Mountain spokeswoman.
Grouse often opens in the latter half of November, often when crews get the right temperatures and humidity to start making their own snow.
“Our team is ready and standing by so we’re hoping they’re going to be getting the guns turned on soon to supplement what Mother Nature has given us,” Grant said.
Over the long term, the ski hills are looking forward to a weak La Nina weather pattern over the winter, which typically means cooler and wetter than normal weather.
