A motorcyclist is dead after a collision on the Lions Gate Bridge, Sunday evening.
Vancouver police and emergency crews rushed to the crash at mid-span around 5: 50 p.m. after a report of the rider colliding with an SUV came in. West Vancouver police assisted in closing the North End of the bridge and helping drivers already on the bridge deck get turned around and back to the North Shore.
Officers had the bridge closed until almost 11 p.m. while investigators were on the scene. The exact cause of crash isn't yet known but speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors.
"It appears to be a tragic set of circumstances that led to the southbound rider coming off of his bike and falling into oncoming northbound traffic," said Const. Sandra Glendinning, VPD media relations officer. "The driver of the SUV was not able to avoid the rider, has co-operated fully and we are not expecting any charges as a result of the collision."
Police are not releasing any information on the victim.
