West Vancouver police are hoping someone from the public will come forward with information after an apparent dummy pipe bomb was found at a local park on Tuesday.

Someone first noticed a suspicious-looking length of pipe in Norgate Park at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They then carried it to the sports fields on Mathias Road and contacted police.

The RCMP sent their explosive disposal unit who closed off the area. The bomb squad quickly learned, though, that the suspicious package was less dangerous than it was intended to look, according to Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver police spokesman, although it did have a fuse emerging from one end and had a small amount of the material used to make sparklers inside. “It was not found to pose any explosive danger but it appears … it’s at least an attempt to look like it would be an explosive device,” he said.

Though no one was at serious risk, investigators still want to know more about who made the device and why.

“It’s of concern that someone would want to make it appear that way. What is the motivation behind assembling something to make it appear as though it’s some kind of an explosive?” Palmer said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact West Vancouver police at 604-925-7300.
