Talk about hot garbage.

District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services members were called to North Shore Waste and Recycling Centre Tuesday to put out a fire burning in the facility’s large shed.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. when the engine compartment of a front-end loader caught fire.

“The vehicle was fully involved inside the transfer station. The building’s sprinkler system kept the fire contained until the arrival of our crews,” said assistant chief Mark Dear. “It filled up that whole building with smoke, but everyone was able to get out, and all people were accounted for, and there were no injuries.”

Crews were able to quickly put out the fire, Dear said.

Metro Vancouver, which runs the transfer station, had to shut the facility down for a few hours while crews dealt with the fire and clean up.

Luckily, the damage was limited to the heavy equipment and did not impact the building or its contents, Dear said.

“The precious garbage, thankfully, didn’t catch fire because that would have been a lot more work,” he said.

As of Wednesday, investigators were still working to confirm the cause, Dear said.
