NORTH Shore students who demonstrate a commitment to the environment could win their school a brand new set of computers.
Staples Canada is donating computer labs, valued at $25,000 each, to 10 elementary and secondary schools across the country. The program is part of the company's 2013 Recycle for Education Computer Lab Contest, this year presented in collaboration with Earth Day Canada.
According to a study commissioned by Staples, almost one in five schools lack a computer lab, and more than half of the computer labs in Canadian public schools are outdated by more than two years.
We live in a tech-driven society and students in elementary and secondary public schools spend nearly six hours in computer labs every week, said Canada Staples president Steve Matyas in a release. Having the latest technology in schools has never been more important, and Staples Canada is proud to bring back this popular contest, he added.
To enter, one student from each Canadian elementary or secondary public school is invited to submit a 500-word essay on how their school has become environmentally responsible. For every entry, Staples will donate $25 to Earth Day Canada.
"Providing youth with opportunities to learn about environmental issues and their solutions are key aspects of our work," said Jed Goldberg, president of Earth Day Canada.
Submit entries at staples.ca/ recycleforeducation or on the Staples Canada Facebook page by Feb. 22. Winners will be announced in April.
