Drivers plug in at Cap Mall

Free charging for shoppers with electric vehicles

ELECTRIC vehicle owners can plug in, turn on and shop out at two new charging stations on the upper parking deck of Capilano Mall this March.

The stations, which are accessible from Hanes Avenue, are offering free charging for up to three hours.

The new stations coincide with the Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association's display of the 1913 Detroit Electric, which is scheduled to be showcased at the mall until March 24.

Originally powered by nickel-iron batteries, the Electric retailed for the price of a large house and had a range of approximately 100 miles.

Now powered by lead-acid batteries, the 96-volt car has a maximum range of 80 kilometres.

New charging stations have also been activated at shopping centres in Burnaby, Coquitlam, Vancouver, and Abbotsford this month, according to a release from VEVA.
