North Vancouver RCMP are looking for witnesses after the driver of a commercial truck struck a dog on a North Vancouver sidewalk.

Police in North Vancouver are looking for witnesses after a dog being walked by its owner on a sidewalk was struck and killed on Friday.

North Vancouver RCMP received a report around 11 a.m. that a dog had been run over by a commercial truck driver at the intersection of West 3rd Street and Forbes Avenue.

The dog's owner was waiting to cross Forbes Avenue on the south side of West 3rd Street when the rear wheels of a commercial truck making a turn jumped the edge of the sidewalk and ran over the dog, according to North Vancouver RCMP.

Sadly, the dog – a three-year-old Maltese named Sweety – did not survive its injuries.

“The owners of Sweety are devastated by the loss of their pet,” said Const. Mansoor Sahak, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP.

Police said the driver of the commercial vehicle – described as a “dump truck” style vehicle with a trailer attachment – didn’t stop and continued south of Forbes Avenue.

Sahak said it’s too early to tell if the driver intentionally fled the scene or if they had any knowledge of the collision at the time of incident. "We don't know what they saw and what they heard," he said. The investigation is continuing.

Police are asking anyone who was driving or walking near West 3rd Street and Forbes Avenue on May 17 between 10:50 a.m. and 10:55 a.m. who make have seen the collision to call the RCMP at 604-985-1311. Police are also asking anyone with dash cam footage or surveillance video to come forward.
