An Edgemont woman is suing the District of North Vancouver, alleging shoddy utilities work caused $150,000 in flooding at her home.
In a notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court, Anna Swinton says her home on the 1000-block of Melbourne Avenue was flooded “causing extensive damages” in November of 2023. The floodwater originated from a water supply line, which, at the time, district crews were doing work on, the claim states.
As a result of the flood, Swinton says some of her home’s contents were destroyed beyond repair and that the property required remediation. She was also required to pay out-of-pocket increased living expenses, the court documents state.
The district was negligent in its work, the claim asserts, alleging among other things: the crew damaged the pipes, failed to properly install them, failed to inspect them and failed to properly flush them.
In addition to the $150,000 in damages, Swinton is asking the courts to award her interest and her legal costs.
The claims have not been tested in court.
The District of North Vancouver has not yet filed a response to the claim, and a statement from district staff said they could not comment on an active claim.
