Vancouver's Lions Gate Bridge was closed for several hours on Saturday, July 20 after a tragic incident involving a Vancouver Fire Rescue Service (VFRS) firetruck and a motorcycle.

The firetruck was responding to a call around 12:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon when the collision between the truck and motorcycle occurred on the Stanley Park causeway approaching the bridge.

"Investigators believe the motorcyclist was traveling in the opposite direction when he collided with another vehicle and was then struck by the oncoming fire truck," states the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) in a press release.

The motorcyclist subsequently died at the scene despite the efforts of firefighters and other emergency crews.

VFRS has announced an investigation into the incident.

“Our crews respond to other people’s emergencies every day in this city, to be involved in such a tragic incident while responding is heartbreaking,” says VFRS Chief Karen Fry in a press release. “Our hearts go out to the friends and family of the motorcyclist and all those involved.”

The VPD is also investigating the incident. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage is asked to call 604-717-3012.
