When a Kia goes up against a freight train, bet on the freight train.

A Coquitlam woman escaped without injury after her vehicle was clipped by a train crossing 15th Street at Bellevue Avenue in Ambleside Thursday morning.

The train was moving at about 25 kilometres per hour when the engine impacted the rear quarter of the Kia, sending it into a spin.

“We’re satisfied the lights were on and the train was sounding its bells. We’re not 100 per cent sure why the driver wasn’t aware a train was coming, but she appears not to have been or appears to have thought she could make it across. And she’s very, very fortunate,” said Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver Police spokesman. “It’s really light damage for getting hit by a train.”

The driver has been ticketed for failing to stop at a rail crossing.

None of the at-grade rail crossings in Ambleside have crossing gates, Palmer said.
