Capilano University has halted almost all classroom and school activity in a bid to stem the spread of COVID-19.
As of Friday, the school had transitioned almost all of its remaining classes to an on-line model allowing instructors to deliver lectures via webcam to students learning from home.
“The majority of them are doing their teaching from home,” said Linda Munro, CapU spokeswoman. “When rooms around campus can be cleaned and closed, we're doing that and signage is going up on those.”
The only exception has been some adult basic education classes, although those have been restructured so that there is appropriate physical distances between students, Munro added.
The school is still ironing out plans for what to do about exams, which are due to start in the coming weeks.
“What I can say is that they won't be happening in person,” Munro said.
The administrators have made the main floor of the Birch building and two computer labs available so students and teachers still have access to their offices, but Munro said the campus has been extremely quiet.
“They are being cleaned meticulously,” Munro said.
CapU’s children’s centre has been closed but the residence buildings remain open for students who have no other accommodations.
Meanwhile, the Capilano Students’ Union has set up a Facebook group dubbed Capilano Quarantine Corner, specifically for students to offer each other emotional and practical support during the pandemic.
