Two pleasure boats were destroyed and another one was heavily damaged by fire at Sewell’s Marina in Horseshoe Bay Saturday.
Most of the clues as to what caused the nautical disaster, however, have sunk to the bottom of the bay.
West Vancouver Fire and Rescue got the first 911 calls around 3:45 p.m. When they arrived at the docks at Sewell’s Marina, they found one boat fully engulfed in flames, another one burning badly and the fire was spreading to a third.
West Vancouver crews ran hoses down to the docks and the Vancouver fire boat arrived to help douse the flames.
“The crews did a great job preventing the spread of the fire with the wooden docks and boats in close proximity to each other,” said assistant fire chief Jeff Bush.
No one was hurt in the blaze.
Bush said it could be some time before investigators are able to figure out what caused the fire.
“One of the [the boats] is still at the bottom of 65 feet of water. … Hopeful they’ll be raising it relatively soon,” he said. “There’s really not much to investigate until it is brought up.”
