Avalanche risks high on North Shore mountains

THE Canadian Avalanche Centre has rated avalanche risk at high in the North Shore mountains Tuesday.

THE Canadian Avalanche Centre has rated avalanche risk at high in the North Shore mountains Tuesday.

Snow expected to fall at upper elevations overnight between Monday and Tuesday is expected to push the risk of avalanche to high both at and below treeline.

The risk is likely to drop down again on Wednesday.

Tim Jones, spokesman for North Shore Rescue, described the rapidly changing risk for the North Shore backcountry as a characteristic of the local terrain and elevation.

At 12 in the afternoon it may be high and by 6 p.m. its gone down to moderate, he said. Its a completely unpredictable snowpack.

Thats why its important for anyone venturing into the backcountry to check conditions online, he said.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre even has an app that can be downloaded for mobile phones for up-to-the-moment forecasts.
