A local sushi spot is closing after just four years in business.

Yohachi Sushi will be serving its last rolls, bento boxes and bowls of ramen on Saturday, Jan. 11.

The restaurant at 161-171 Esplanade West in North Vancouver opened in October 2020.

While owner Sonia Lee said she enjoyed the business and her many friendly customers, it was very difficult during COVID-19 lockdowns.

“So now I’m very tired,” she said. “I want to rest. I need some free time.”

Lee, who lives in the Grousewoods neighbourhood, spends about half the year here and the other half in her native South Korea.

Lee said she plans to spend more time there as she catches up on rest.

But she said it’s bittersweet to close Yohachi.

“Lots of our customers are very sad,” Lee said. Much of her clientele comes from other local businesses, including the ICBC headquarters above her.

Will she ever return to the restaurant industry?

“In a few years maybe,” Lee said. “[But] for one or two years, I rest.”
