North Vancouver Kiwanis Care Centre activity worker Rosabel Sinclair meets with some of the residents who were recipients of Valentine’s Day cards through the Veterans Affairs Canada Valentines for Vets program. The program has its roots in 1989 when late newspaper columnist Ann Landers encouraged her readers to make valentines for veterans in North American care facilities. She wrote about it annually, continuing to remind readers to remember the sacrifices of their nations’ veterans. Veterans Affairs Canada got involved in 1996 and encourages Canadian schools, individuals and organizations to make handmade cards, and receives and distributes them to veterans in long-term care facilities across the country by Feb. 14. The local care centre saw 11 residents receive cards this year, including those shown here: Eve Roberts, RCAF Winnipeg, Second World War; Bob Vickers, Korean War; and Constance Wyness, a nurse at the Battle of Normandy. veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/get-involved/valentines-for-veterans
