- Expressive Modern, by Amy Lau, The Monacelli Press, 216 pages, $60.
LOOKING at the photographs of homes that interior designer Amy Lau has worked on is to witness a study in precision.
Every object has been carefully selected and placed for the maximum impact and balance.
It's no surprise that a motto for her design company is Curate, Don't Decorate.
Her approach is to blend the work of contemporary artists and beautiful midcentury furnishings, surrounding them with fabrics and colours to best enhance the presentation. Lau's love of nature and abstract art inspires her to bring both elements into her design work.
Having worked as director at the Lin-Weinberg Gallery in New York and now with her own company, she continues to be involved in other projects: as cofounder of Design Miami and Design Exchange, also as co-director of the design council for New York's Museum of Arts and Design.
Thirteen different residences are featured in this collection of Lau's work. Townhouses, apartments, lofts, lake homes, and single residences all show her modern sensibility blending with stunning period furnishings.
Each project is beautifully photographed and presented over several pages.
The description for each project offers a chance to learn more about Lau's approach as she discusses the importance of colour, use of space, focal points and much more.
