It seems that low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint is everywhere on store shelves these days.
There has been much written on the pros and cons of these eco-friendly products and you will probably see more and more of them in upcoming years. The reason for this is that these healthy paints are not only increasingly chic but offer many advantages over the standard variety we have all used in our homes over the years.
Many of us have shied away from these ecofriendly products because of their price tag and the actual quality of the paint.
Today's green paints, however, have come a long way in terms of quality and selection.
So why go green? Aside from the obvious fact that they are easy on the environment, they are also quick drying and low-VOC or VOC-free.
Their low odour means improved air quality for our families and many of these paints are self-priming.
I love the fact that these paints are not only a healthier choice but also most are available in matte, eggshell, satin and semigloss finishes.
Among some of the more popular choices are Benjamin Moore's Aura, Ben and Natura interior paints. If you are looking for a zero-VOC choice then you may want to inquire about the Natura brand. It is virtually odourless and has excellent durability.
I have used the Aura brand inside my home and love the fact that is it low-VOC with only a very mild odour.
Farrow & Ball (found at At Home in West Vancouver) and Pittsburgh Paints (found at Dick's Lumber in North Vancouver) also carry nice lines of these low-VOC paints. So there is a nice selection to choose from.
One thing to be aware of with certain brands of low-VOC paint is that the tinting process may sometimes add VOCs. It's important to ask your paint provider if this is the case. I know with the Benjamin Moore Aura line, the tints are also low-VOC.
It's always a good idea to ask ahead of time if you are really concerned.
Look for one quart Aura paints at Howard's Paint and Wallpaper for $34 (one gallon is $75). Natura one quart is $31 (one gallon is $70).
