North Vancouver’s Chartwell Churchill House Retirement Residence’s Kathy MacLean and Veronica Scott enjoy a session with St. John Ambulance volunteers David Ayton (and his dog Sophie), Jessica Donegan (and Kepler), Susan Barnard (and Charlie) and Paula Cayley (and Diva). Together with their canine companions, they’re part of the organization’s Therapy Dog Program. Churchill House has participated in the program since 2011 under the direction of Leigh Vincent-Lambert, the residence’s lifestyle and programs manager. Weekly visits provide a welcomed opportunity for residents to spend time with furry friends. The program is volunteer-based and sees dog and owner teams receive certification and training, as well as undergo background checks, behavioral assessments and service sector suitability. sja.ca
