A group of kids with parents working in the City of North Vancouver had an action-packed day this week.
On Wednesday, a handful of Grade 9 students got a glimpse of what their parents do at several departments around the city.
In the morning, the kids got a tour of city hall, where they got to meet Mayor Linda Buchanan. Then they went to the city’s fire department for a tour and presentation. After that, they got to check out the North Vancouver RCMP building, and hear from officers and staff there.
After lunch, the kids split up to do specific activities where their parents work.
At North Vancouver City Fire Department, assistant chief Mike Danks said the kids had a blast.
Tasks at the fire hall included a hose drill, climbing the aerial truck with a harness and being lowered from the top of the hose tower.
“They really enjoyed their time and I think it put into perspective what their parents are going through,” Danks said, adding that they also emphasize the mental health aspects of the work and the importance of checking in with one another.
