THE FOLLOWING is a selection of volunteer opportunities from various community organizations, made available through Volunteer North Shore, a service of North Shore Community Resources Society.
Recreation and leisure program volunteer: The recreation and leisure program focuses on developing fitness, nutrition, social and recreational activities for people with a developmental disability. Activities include: weigh and walk, nutritional lectures, community events and other activities that have a focus on wellness and recreation. The volunteer's role is to support the participants in the scheduled activities. Friendly walker: This volunteer position will assist some more frail seniors to go out on local walks for approximately 30 minutes. Some residents, although very independent, feel more confident walking to do errands with a support person. The volunteer would arrive 15 minutes prior to departure to help gather any supplies and would escort the senior to do their errands.
Bus driver: Volunteer with a valid unrestricted Class 4 B.C. driver's license is needed to drive an 18 passenger van for seniors' outings. Good knowledge of Lower Mainland an asset, but not mandatory.
Thrift shop volunteer: Volunteers are needed to help volunteer coordinators sorting clothes and other articles in preparation for sale in thrift shop. Duties include: sorting, pricing and selling.
Door-to-door fundraiser: Volunteers are needed to canvass door-to-door in their neighbourhood to raise awareness of the seriousness of impaired driving and collect donations to support MADD's community and victim support programs.
