A new event hopes to get the next generation of North Shore cyclists pumped on the activity.

The first-annual North Van Bike Fest will roll out at Civic Plaza on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will celebrate North Vancouver’s biking culture, and is designed to bring together community members of all ages who share a passion for cycling.

With a lineup of activities and entertainment, the bike fest promises to be a great way to kick off Metro Vancouver’s annual Go by Bike Week, running June 3 to 9.

The event will feature a kids' bike “rodeo,” a specialized course designed to teach little ones the rules of the road and how to navigate obstacles safely. Volunteers from the North Shore Safety Council will help young riders navigate the rodeo obstacle course.

The event will also include an mountain bike skills course featuring a ramp, bridge and teeter-totter.

In addition to skill-building activities, the festival will feature live music from the Clementine Family Band and DJ Prime Collective.

Meanwhile, local bike shops will showcase the latest tech in traditional bikes, e-bikes, cargo e-bikes, as well as accessories for adults and children.

To kick off Go by Bike Week, the HUB Cycling North Shore team will be on hand to perform basic tune-ups, give out snacks and provide information about cycling in the community.

Participants can also learn more about cargo e-bikes and the District of North Vancouver’s lending program. Outreach staff will have a variety of cargo e-bikes on display, and answer questions about these versatile bikes.

Representatives from Lime will be on hand to tell participants more about the North Shore e-bike share program. This well-used program has seen more than 35,000 users since 2021.

For those worrying about their bikes being stolen, RCMP Community Policing will be onsite to share best practices on how to reduce bike theft. That includes instruction on registering your bike with Project 529 Garage, a service that connects with local police to improve recovery of stolen bikes.
