Photos: Canoe races kick off Squamish Nation's Amalgamation celebrations

A strong breeze didn’t stop paddlers from going all out at Swáywey̓ (Ambleside Beach) on Saturday

A sturdy breeze didn’t deter teams of canoe racers from going all out at this year’s Swáywey̓ (Ambleside Beach) Canoe Races.

Spectators cheered on their teams on Saturday as the paddlers completed a loop that starts east of the Welcome Figure, out to Dundarave, then back again. The two-day annual event kicked off the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) 100-year Amalgamation celebrations.

Amalgamation Day is July 23, 100-years after a document was signed by 16 First Nations chiefs to assemble as one governing body, which is known today as Squamish Nation.

Following the canoe races, this month there will also be evenings dedicated to drumming and singing, lacrosse games, talent shows, cultural activities, ceremonies, and a large festival on Amalgamation Day itself.
