A special event has been organized for Mother's Day in Vancouver for people without moms.
While many people will spend Sunday, May 11, with their mother and other family, that's not possible for many people. That's why The Parentless Club has organized Motherless Day.
The group helps create a community of support for people without parents. The first Motherless Day event was in Toronto in 2024.
"For those without mothers, the 'Hallmark Holiday' that is Mother’s Day carries a bittersweet undertone," reads a media release from the organizers. "The cheery slogans and 'gifts for mom' ideas that bring joy to many are met with a deep sense of sadness and longing."
Motherless Day will feature guided journalling, bouquet building, memory collating and other similar activities. There will also be food and drink (including gluten-free and vegan options).
"Most importantly, we’ll spend the day with people who truly get it—without needing to say a word (though let’s be honest, we’ll have plenty to say)!" add organizers on the event's ticket page.
As well as being a space for people without mothers to gather, the event is also a fundraiser for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
Organizers note that while the event is meant for people without a mother, support also matters.
"You’re welcome to bring a guest if it helps you feel comfortable, as long as they have a ticket," reads the event's FAQ.
