'There's a bit of a yoyo’ing': Vancouver forecast has mix of warm and showery weather

'If you haven't done so already, get your rain coat out and get your umbrella'

It's going to be rainy in Vancouver this week.

As astronomical autumn starts in Vancouver, the city is going to feel much more fall-like.

This week will see the region transition into a fall-like weather pattern as storms hit the north coast and Haida Gwaii and the south coast is impacted by the remnants, Environment Canada meteorologist Ross Macdonald tells VIA.

"If you haven't done so already, get your raincoat out and get your umbrella," he says.

That said, the weather will be fairly typical for late September as things transition into a more active fall cycle.

"We have a strong storm hitting the north coast tonight (Sept. 22) and tomorrow (Sept. 23)," says Macdonald. "We're really on the periphery of that but we might see some showers in the morning before we expect some clearing skies in the afternoon."

Weatherhood shows a 40 per cent chance of showers Monday with a high of 18 C to 20 C depending on the neighbourhood, with inland areas slightly warmer.

The skies should stay clear over night, Macdonald says, leading to the nicest and warmest day of the week: Tuesday.

A high of 22 C is expected with clear skies throughout the day. However, the nice weather won't last and by Tuesday evening  another frontal system is expected to arrive.

Plenty of showers are expected Wednesday, with up to 15 mm falling, spread out through the day. A high of just 16 C is expected, significantly cooler than the high of Tuesday.

"There's a bit of a yoyo’ing with the frontal system," says Macdonald.

Continuing with that theme, Thursday is expected to be significantly drier, though it won't be as clear or as warm as Tuesday. It may only get up to 16 C.

However, another storm on B.C.'s north coast is expected later on Thursday, which will send some rain to Vancouver by Thursday night. Up to 10 mm is expected.

"Showers may be lingering for the first half of Friday," says Macdonald. "There should be partial clearing Friday afternoon."

Macdonald says the easing into fall weather is right on schedule this year, with more activity coming off the Pacific Ocean for late September.
