Salmon Arm police say they have contacted the Ministry of Children and Family Development after catching a drunk driver with a young child in his vehicle.
On July 28, a woman reported a possible intoxicated driver in a white diesel truck heading eastbound on Highway 1 passing through Tappen.
“Salmon Arm RCMP were able to intercept the vehicle and watched it turn off Highway 1, suspected to be an attempt to evade police, as it then went around the roundabout and went back onto Highway 1 still heading eastbound,” said Const. Andrew Hodges of the Salmon Arm RCMP.
Police stopped the vehicle, and the driver was identified as a 31-year old man. Officers noted “slow and slurred speech.”
Officers also found the man’s child in the vehicle with him.
Two roadside breath demands tests were conducted and both resulted in a fail reading.
The driver was served a 90-day driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. According to police, the ex-spouse of the driver came to pick up the man and the child.
Police referred the matter to RoadSafetyBC and also contacted the Ministry of Children and Family Development due to the age of the child and the dangerous situation they were placed in.
